Suga: Govt. will keep working to contain virus

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga Yoshihide says the government will continue to do its best to contain the coronavirus and protect people's lives and health.

Suga said the government has been dealing with the challenge of containing the outbreak since January. He said it will continue to work hard to prevent the explosive increase in infections that has been seen in the US and some European countries.

Suga also commented on Prime Minister Abe Shinzo achieving the milestone of the most consecutive days in office for a Japanese leader. Suga said that since its inauguration, the Abe Cabinet has put its all into each of the challenges it faced, from reviving the economy and rebuilding foreign and security policies to establishing a social security system that benefits all generations.

He said the seven years and eight months have passed very quickly.

Asked about Abe's visit to a Tokyo hospital on Monday, Suga said he heard it is for an additional examination after a checkup last week.

He quoted Abe as saying the other day that he will work hard after returning to work from his summer holiday.

Suga said he meets Abe every day and sees no change in his condition.
