Suga's Cabinet approval rate drops to 42%

An NHK opinion poll shows that the approval rate for Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide's Cabinet dropped to 42 percent, down 14 points from last month. The disapproval rate rose to 36 percent, up 17 points.

The telephone survey was conducted over the weekend. More than 1,200 people responded.

Of those who support the Cabinet, 36 percent said it seems better than other ministerial lineups, while 21 percent said they trust Suga and 16 percent said it's the Cabinet of the parties they support.

Among those who disapprove, 38 percent said they don't expect much from the Cabinet's policies, while 29 percent said it cannot get things done and 17 percent said they don't trust Suga.

As for the coronavirus outbreak, 85 percent said they are worried that they or their family members could contract the virus, while 12 percent said they aren't worried.

Asked about the government's response to the outbreak so far, 41 percent gave a positive assessment, while 56 percent had a negative view.

On the government's plan to extend the "Go To Travel" campaign to help the tourism industry, 12 percent said they support an extension of the campaign, while 79 percent called for the program to be suspended.

Once the government approves coronavirus vaccines, people will get the shots for free. Asked whether they want to be vaccinated, 50 percent said they do, while 36 percent said they don't. The rest said they don't know or didn't answer the question.

The support rate for the main governing Liberal Democratic Party stands at 38.2 percent, while its coalition partner Komeito is at 3.4 percent.

In the opposition bloc, The Constitutional Democratic Party has a support rate of 5.1 percent. Nippon Ishin, Japan Innovation Party has 2.4 percent; Japanese Communist Party with 2.2 percent; Democratic Party for the People with 0.6 percent; Social Democratic Party with 0.4 percent; Reiwa Shinsengumi with 0.3 percent and The Party of Protecting People from NHK with 0.2 percent.

Nearly 40 percent of the respondents said they do not support any party.
