Tokyo Appears Eager To Work With New Us Government

Tokyo appears eager to work with new US government

The Japanese government appears intent on collaborating with an incoming US administration to jointly lead efforts to bolster international cooperation.

Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide tweeted a congratulatory message to US Democrats Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on their projected victory in the US presidential election.

Suga wrote that he looks forward to working with them "to further strengthen the Japan-US Alliance and ensure peace, freedom, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond."

Suga is also expected to aim to build a personal relationship of trust with Biden, as his predecessor Abe Shinzo did with US President Donald Trump.

The Japanese government plans to arrange with the US a summit between Suga and Biden at an appropriate time.

Japan's government and ruling party officials are hoping the two countries will deepen their partnership to deal with international challenges, including the coronavirus pandemic and climate change.

Protectionist measures and other policies of the Trump administration led to disruption of global unity on occasions such as Group of Seven meetings. But Biden appears willing to place a greater emphasis on international cooperation and alliances.
