Tokyo confirms 385 new coronavirus cases

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government says it confirmed 385 new cases of the coronavirus on Saturday.

The daily tally of infections has surpassed 300 for the second day in a row. The figure brings the total number of cases in the capital to 17,454.

The metropolitan government is urging people to be on heightened alert, as the situation in Tokyo remains extremely serious.

Many festivities for the bon holiday have been curtailed. The summer break traditionally marks a homecoming for ancestral spirits. However, residents of Tokyo are advised not to travel, visit hometowns for family reunions, or dine out in groups.
