Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko is projected to win a second term following Sunday's vote. Koike has made an online address.
Koike said, "I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation for the support that has been given to me. This will be an important second term for me. I feel the heavy responsibility. "
She added, "The most urgent task will be handling the coronavirus. I want to protect the health and lives of the people of Tokyo."
Ballot-counting still underway, but NHK's election team says Koike will beat out 21 other contenders.
The campaign lacked the usual mass rallies, as those vying for the governor's title navigated the risks posed by the coronavirus.
Koike and others made crisis response a hot topic.
In the coming term, the Governor will also have to deal with the financial and organizational fallout of having to postpone the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.
