Tokyo seeks more hotel rooms for patients

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is seeking more hotel rooms to accommodate coronavirus sufferers with mild or no symptoms.

Tokyo government officials started moving patients to hotels in the capital earlier this month to free up hospital beds for those in a more serious condition.

However, the healthcare system remains strained, with 2,158 confirmed infections as of Monday.

Officials will accept applications from hotels from Tuesday to next Monday. Tokyo government will take over hotel operations by paying for the rooms and sending in medical staffs. It plans to use hotel rooms for patients until around the end of June.

Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko told reporters on Monday that she hopes to implement this measure with everyone's cooperation.
