Torrential rain forecast for wide areas in Japan

Japanese weather officials are warning of possible landslides and flooding in wide areas from Kyushu to the Kanto region as torrential rain is forecast through Sunday morning.

In one hour through 5 a.m., 40 millimeters of rain fell on Makurazaki City in Kagoshima Prefecture, Kyushu.

Authorities have issued a landslide alert in parts of Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures, also in Kyushu.

The seasonal rain front is expected to bring more than 50 millimeters of hourly rainfall in some areas in Shikoku, southern Kyushu, Kanto, and the Tokai region through Sunday morning.

Tornadoes, strong gusts of wind and lightning strikes are also possible.
