Xperia 1 Ii Gets Raw Camera Support In Latest Update (58.0.a.3.88)

Xperia 1 II gets RAW camera support in latest update (58.0.A.3.88)

Sony has released an exciting new firmware update for Xperia 1 II (Mk2) owners, adding RAW support across all three of its rear camera lenses when using the Photo Pro app. Build version 58.0.A.3.88 is currently rolling out to select regions for the single SIM variant (XQ-AT51) including Russia, US and carriers including O2 UK and Orange in Europe. There is no update for the dual SIM variant (XQ-AT52) at the time of writing, though this should follow shortly.

Users can now select between three file formats for their images, this includes 1) RAW, 2) RAW & JPEG and 3) JPEG. It is worth noting that RAW (.DNG) images can only be stored to internal storage only, and with a 4:3 aspect ratio. Sony has likely chosen an internal-only storage option for RAW given the larger file sizes and speed needed to transfer files – users may have had a poor experience if using slow microSD memory cards.

We don’t see this as a big deal as owners can always transfer images to SD card once photos are taken if needed – plus the Xperia 1 II comes with a reasonable 256GB of internal storage space, which should be enough for most users. When shooting RAW, the continuous burst shooting and Auto HDR options are unavailable. Once again, the limitations around file sizes is likely to be the reason here.

We have seen some reports of an improvement with the front-facing selfie camera in videos, particularly through WhatsApp. This was one area where there was a number of criticisms when the phone launched. The update also adds the 1 July 2020 Android security patches.

If you recently updated to this exciting new update, we’d love to hear your impressions in the comments below. Let us know if you’ve noticed any improvements in the selfie camera, and how you’re finding Sony’s implementation of RAW support.
