He said he is glad to be able to bring good news to the late former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo, who was shot on Friday in the western city while campaigning for Sato.

Sato said at a news conference on Sunday night that he continued his campaign with an unwavering spirit despite the tragedy, in which an act of violence took Abe's life.

Suspect in Abe's shooting reportedly claims he test-fired gun

Investigative sources said the suspect in Friday's shooting of former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo claimed he had test-fired his gun at a religious organization's facility.

Abe was fatally shot as he was making a campaign speech in the western city of Nara. The shooter is believed to have used a handmade gun. Police arrested the 41-year-old suspect, Yamagami Tetsuya, an unemployed resident of the city.
