A Japanese meteorologist says the frequency of localized torrential downpours in Japan has more than doubled in 45 years.

The director of the typhoon and severe weather research department at the Meteorological Research Institute, Kato Teruyuki, published a report on changes in Japan's precipitation patterns between 1976 and 2020.

The relatives of Japanese nationals abducted by North Korea decades ago, have urged Japan's government to help all remaining abductees return home as soon as possible. They also demanded Pyongyang make an early decision to realize the return of their loved ones.

The relatives adopted a resolution listing these requests at a rally on Sunday. Prime Minister Kishida Fumio attended the gathering of roughly 800 people.

A group of researchers says it has found a new type of Parkinson's disease apparently induced by a different protein from the one known to cause the disease.

Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that causes unintended or uncontrollable movements, such as shaking of limbs or stiffness. It is generally thought that accumulation of an abnormal protein known as alpha-Synuclein in the brain contributes to the disease.

A special Japanese police squad trained and equipped to respond to hostage-taking and other incidents has its origins in the aftermath of terrorist attacks in the 1970s and 1980s by the now-disbanded Japanese Red Army.

The former leader of the militant group, Shigenobu Fusako, was released from prison on Saturday. In 1977, the group hijacked a passenger plane and forced it to land in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and demanded the release of group members from prison.

Shigenobu Fusako, a former leader of the now-disbanded Japanese Red Army militant group, has been released from prison after completing her 20-year term.

Shigenobu, who is now 76 years old, was convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison for her involvement in the 1974 seizure of the French Embassy in The Hague, the Netherlands.

Japan's GSDF conducts live-fire exercises

Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force held its annual live-fire exercises at the foot of Mount Fuji in central Japan on Saturday.

Some 3,300 personnel and 36 tanks and other vehicles took part. The drills were held at the GSDF's Higashi-Fuji training camp in Shizuoka Prefecture.
