Coronavirus infections continue to rise in Tokyo

Tokyo Metropolitan Government officials say 161 new cases of coronavirus infection were confirmed in the capital on Tuesday, bringing the total to 2,319.

Tokyo has been reporting daily increases of more than 100 cases since last Wednesday, except on Monday when the figure was below 100.

The number of new daily coronavirus cases reported in Japan on Tuesday stood at nine as of 11:30 a.m.

This brings the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 4,108, including people found to have the virus during arrival checks at airports, health ministry and quarantine officials, as well as those who returned to Japan on chartered planes from China.

The number of confirmed coronavirus infections in Japan had reached 1,896 as of Monday noon. The figure includes 14 people who returned from China's Hubei Province on chartered flights.

The data was compiled by local governments and the health ministry. It includes 41 cases among health ministry officials, quarantine officers and those who were found to have the virus during arrival checks at airports.
