Mobile phone data show that foot traffic has slightly increased around some of the major railway stations in six Japanese prefectures where the second coronavirus state of emergency has been lifted.

NHK analyzed big data collected by telecom carrier NTT Docomo to see how many people were around the stations between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Monday. The company collects data while protecting users' privacy.

All fuel units removed from No.3 reactor pool

The operator of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station has announced that it completed the removal of all remaining nuclear fuel assemblies from the storage pool of a reactor building for safe storage in a facility in the plant's compound.

This is the first time the firm has relocated all fuel units from any of the plant's three reactors that suffered a meltdown following the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

Ashikaga forest fire almost contained

Officials in the city of Ashikaga, north of Tokyo, say a forest fire that started a week ago has almost been contained. Ground Self-Defense Force personnel and firefighters are trying to extinguish the flames.

The fire broke out in southwestern Tochigi Prefecture on February 21. About 106 hectares had burned as of 6 p.m. on Saturday.

AI-based systems help diagnose cancer

New systems have been developed in Japan that use artificial intelligence to analyze X-rays and endoscopic images to detect abnormalities in the human body that may indicate cancer.

One such venture is a joint project by AI developer Preferred Networks, Kyoto Medical Association and others. It is a deep-learning analysis tool that helps physicians diagnose lung cancer from chest X-rays. Areas of abnormality are indicated in color.

Sea levels along Japan's coast hit record high

The average sea level along Japan's coast in 2020 was the highest on record, rising more than 8 centimeters from the usual figure.

Japan's Meteorological Agency calculates the figure every year based on tidal data observed at 16 locations on the coast from Hokkaido to Kyushu.
